Emerald Resort & Casino’s weekly Sunday poker tournament gets bigger

Emerald PokerBigger is better when it comes to poker tournaments. Due to demand from players, Emerald Resort & Casino has ‘upgraded’ and rehashed the traditional Sunday afternoon poker tournament which has been improved, made more exciting and is bigger.

In terms of rules, regulations and the general running of the weekly event, it will now be consistent with the annual World Series of Poker (WSOP) Africa series that is held at Emerald Resort & Casino every February.

Changes include:
• Buy in of R300.00 and an entry fee of R30.00
• Each player will be allowed to re-enter once
• Tournament will start at 14h00 and re-entries will close at 15h00
• Re-entry will cost the same as above (R300 & R30)
• 100% of the buy in will be in the prize pool and will payout up to 9th place. (Depending on entries)
• Starting stack at 10,000 and the blind levels will increase every 15 minutes. (6 hour tournament)
• Once all 40 seats are sold, only alternate seats will be sold for re-entries.
• The tournament will run completely in accordance with WSOP rules and regulations.

On the last Sunday of every month, the buy in will be increased to R400.00 with a tournament fee of R40.00. Additional prizes will be allocated for the first three places.
• 1st place: Prize money and a  weekend stay at a one-bedroom lodge
• 2nd place: Prize money and a  weekend stay at a double hotel room
• rd place: Prize money and a  weekend stay at a one-bedroom chalet

At the end of the re-entry period, the gaming staff will confirm the amount of entrants at the tournament and will display the prizes up to 9th place on the poker clock.
“Our Sunday Poker has certainly gathered a loyal following over the last 3 years,” says Sharon de Leur, Marketing Executive at Emerald Resort & Casino. “Aligning our popular Sunday Poker with the WSOP Africa tournament rules & regulations provides the opportunity of experiencing International standards and the format of the biggest International poker tournament in the world at an affordable price.”

The small scale weekly Sunday tournaments will give players who are not confident enough to enter WSOP Africa the opportunity to experience exactly what the tournament format entails before the next WSOP Africa tournament.

World champ Michael ‘The Grinder’ Mizrachi wins main event at WSOP Africa

Emerald champ The grinderThe Grinder wowed South African spectators as he seamlessly won the final event of The World Series of Poker (WSOP) Africa held at the Emerald Resort & Casino for the third consecutive year. Mizrachi takes home $101,267 in prize money, the gold and silver WSOP Africa Ring and a Crystal trophy to boot.

The Grinder won his final hand against Karl Myburgh. At the start of heads up play, Michael entered the fray with 3,126,000 in chips against Karl’s 354,000.  With a 9 to 1 chip disadvantage, Karl had his work cut out for him from the start.

In the final hand Karl went ‘all in’ with Ace/Eight against Grinder’s pair of Queens on a Seven/Six/Ten/Seven board. A Jack hit the ‘river’ and Mizrachi walked away ‘high fiving’ an appreciative crowd.

“I wanted to put South Africa on the WSOP map,” says The Grinder, “hopefully I have done that and this win will encourage many more international players to take part in WSOP Africa next year. The country is amazing in its Emerald champ Grinder and Jack Effeldiversity and the hosts go beyond the call of duty in making the stay a memorable one.”

Tournament Director Jack Effel adds his congratulations. “It’s fantastic that Grinder came through to South Africa and we enjoyed having him here in the tournament. He’s the first international player to win on African soil.”

Jarred Solomon: First WSOP Africa 2013 Ring Winner

Jack and JarrodRunning until 10 February, the annual World Series Of Poker (WSOP) Africa tournament is taking place at Emerald Resort & Casino for the third consecutive year. Finishing off the first event in the small hours of the morning, Jarred Solomon has been hailed the first Ring winner of the tournament.

The two day event, which began on 5 February with competitors from all over South Africa, had a combined 278 entries from flight 1A and 1B, saw Jarred walking away with just over $20,000 in prize money.

The last thirty contestants standing were guaranteed payouts. The final table of ten which was streamed live, comprised of Eric Brand; Jay Sookoo; David Dadic; Jason Dominguez; Tyronne Sacks; Nawal Jaftha; Dr Eben Lottering; Michael Holden; Levi Dare and winner Jarred Solomon.

Jarrod Event 1 WinnerDuring the final play, Jarred and second place winner Levi Dare went head to head with Jarred’s 4 to 1 chip advantage. It didn’t take him long to get Levi ‘all in’ who had two pairs but didn’t hold up against Jarred’s king of diamonds and jack of spades for a king high straight. Levi would need to hit one of the two remaining queens or treys to survive but he just missed as the river revealed the four of spades. Levi entered the final table as the chip leader but finished in a respectable second with more than a $12,000 payout.

A former personal trainer, Jarred is now a professional poker player. In an interview with tournament director Jack Effel after his win, 26 year old Jarred admitted that he faced tough opponents throughout the tournament.

The full video interview between Jarred and Jack can be viewed on YouTube.

There are still five tournament rings and the ladies pendant up for grabs during the rest of the tournament. International poker legends Michael ‘The Grinder’ Mizrachi and Scotty Nguyen have been eliminated by local players in the smaller events but are gearing up for the WSOP Africa Main Event and the $10,000 buy-in High Roller No-Limit Hold’em Tournament on Saturday 9 February.
